Ask a random person in India about the need for sunglasses and many would admit they wear the accessories just to add to their glamour quotient; some would cite the summer glare and many would even shrug off its need. However, very few would be aware that sunglasses are helpful in protecting the eyes against harmful UV radiation.

Long term problems of the eye such as the macular degeneration and cataracts can be linked to sun exposure. The possibility of a disease, known as photokeratitis caused by sunburning of the eyes is another menace; even some deadly cancers are associated with exposure to UV radiation.

Maui Jim India, the producer of revolutionary polarized technology sunglasses that block 100% of UV radiation, held an awareness drive at Phoneix Mall to educate people about the health benefits of sunglasses. The multi-activity session was held in association with Gangar Opticians over four days from December 25 to 28.

“UV radiation from the sun not only damages the skin but also the eyes. Long-term exposure to UV radiation can cause lasting damage to your eyes. The ultraviolet light rays called UVA and UVB have the potential to cause damage to your retina and corneas. But, while people in India are all taken by the idea of wearing sunscreen lotions, not many people realize the need of UV protection for the eyes. Moreover, even the people who do wear sunglasses do not seem to care whether their pair is equipped to provide UV protection. Our activity was aimed at educating people about this need,” says I. Rahumathullah, Managing Director, Maui Jim, India. 

Another major misconception among the people is that sunglasses are a summer accessory. The sun might be less harsh in winters but the UV radiation is as harmful in any season.

During the session, people interacted with Maui Jim experts and sought clarity on issues related to eye protection. They were also introduced to the product and were offered eye consultation.

Maui Jim sunglasses are also available in prescription so that people with vision correction needs who wear spectacles are not deprived of the benefits of sunglasses while stepping out.
