A passion for designing, Chhaya Mehrotra’s tryst with fabrics began as early as 10 years old when she saw her mother’s stitching machine and observed her father’s perception of design. Born in one of the oldest textile printing families of Banaras, she was always fascinated by creativity and went on to pursue her post graduation in textile design from NIFT.
After settling in her domestic life where she had unconditional support from her family, Chhaya ran her own design studio- Swechha in Varanasi for four years, and held several independent exhibitions in Varanasi, Lucknow and NCR. She has been a board member on the Advisory Committee to DC, Handlooms in 2006 from Varanasi. She has vast experience in textile printing and is also a preliminary member of FDCI.
Chhaya, who presently heads the design department at Art n Design Inc., ventured into the world of fashion and launched her label in 2009, “Chhaya Mehrotra”. The USP of her label is the use of pure silk and cotton adorned with varied surface techniques.
This year, Chhaya Mehrotra stepped into mainstream fashion at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2012 with her collection titled 'The Crystal Heraut'.
The collection 'The Crystal Heraut' showcases beautiful amalgamations of Indian heritage with luxury. The designs are all about shimmery crystals playing hide and seek in the lavish folds and shadows of rich fabrics such as chamois satin, velvet, chiffon and lace, in her signature palette of black, navy and pink shot with accents of peacock green, purple and a hint of virginal white.
