Designer Asha Gupta presents vintage collection for new age brides

Designer Asha Gupta launched a beautiful collection of vibrant and dazzling lehengas as well as sarees. The collection includes various types of embroideries and embellishments with skin friendly fabrics to make it more luxurious.

Benarsi range
She showcased her range of exotic benarsi sarees with beautiful zari work in pure gold which were made in Varanasi. The sarees were in vibrant hues and were originally white and had been dyed, while the colour of the zari and meena remained the same. Every bride would want to have one such piece in her trousseau. The USP in this range was that they had been designed by traditional weavers from Varanasi. Variety was added to the sarees by weaving Meena (a kind of resham zari) on it.  There were also sarees with embroidered borders and real gold zari work on them.

Rajwada Sarees
The sarees shown in this collection were inspired by the Maharanis and Patranis of olden times. They are also called “Rajwada” sarees . These sarees were paired with matching accessories. Another accessory which was prevalent in those times, the “Tagdi”,  was also attached to the left side of the person wearing it. The sarees had borders made of velvet or silk and had a lot of gota, ari, kundan, nakshi, pitta mukesh, chain stone and dabka work on them.

Concept Sarees
Then there were the concept sarees. These were sarees that are worn either by the bride on her first function right after the wedding or by the mother, sister or sister-in-law of the bride/groom on any such function. The sarees showcased were in the following styles:

Two /Three piece saree
Cut palla  saree
Fix pleats saree
Wrap around saree
Lehenga cum saree
These clearly stood out from the usual “six yard” rectangular saree.

Bridal range
The bridal collection for 2009-10 was a mixture of different work and fabrics. The base fabric used for them was mostly benarsi such as raw silk, brocades, whereas the chunni was mostly of net. The models sashayed down the ramp with stoles to cover their heads without which a bridal look is never complete. While most of the lehengas showcased were completely traditional, others were more western in their look while one piece was multi-coloured. The reason different looks were showcased was because the modern-day bride has her own distinct choice when it comes to her bridal trousseau. Most of the lehengas were in the “Kali” pattern as they are most in vogue today, as it makes one look taller and the fall also comes out better.
