French Connection spring-summer 2014 collection

Menswear: To start the spring summer season, French Connection plays with textures through traditional herringbone and Prince of Wales check, while grindle yarns lend a thrifty vintage effect to shirting. Floral prints feature throughout the collection, maintaining the collection’s relaxed and casual feel. Playful, yet masculine western shirting also features, nodding to the fun “cowboys and Indian” theme seen on the runway.

Cutting and sewing classic fabrics together adds innovation and detail to the modern man’s wardrobe. Ranging from the classic shirt with a full placket poplin front to the jersey back, unusual combinations of fabrics and prints are re-worked and updated with new scales and proportions. French Connection polos get an upgrade with new badges and appliqués in pure cotton and stretch fabrics. Stretch cottons offer a sporty approach to men’s classic garments tapping into the ever-popular sports luxe trend.

A nod to safari is also apparent with striking all-over animal prints on vintage khaki bases. Multi army pockets adorn shorts and trousers to calm the abundance of pattern and animal camouflage, which offers a subtle alternative for those less brave.

Casual wear gets a boost this season with the all-new “F” that appears on shirts and tee-shirts, and promises to be a recurring theme for the coming seasons as well. Space-inspired motifs and full-graphic photo prints dominate the men’s range. The season’s staple, shorts come in a range of choices; printed and reversible, in denim and sweats. The denims in the French Connection Jeans collection are distressed and dirty, with design influences from the workers, who wore them. The silhouettes are simple, yet versatile and easy to wear.

Natural linens and slubby fabrics reflect the roughness and honesty of the trade. Handcrafted elements of panel printing, Chinese print and hand-painted camouflage highlight the collection’s dedication to skills and authenticity.

Womenswear: The spring summer season sees a refreshing new colour palette emerge in soft sorbet shades. Zest green and peach melba top the colour leader board and are offered in easy silk separates as well as drop waist dresses. A sprinkling of sequins is also seen in this package with a subtle animal print adorning the standout dress of the season as well as tutti frutti embellishment transforming classic summer staples.

Bright whites continue to dominate the summer collection with the injection of intricate micro pleats adding texture to the more sporty shapes. Dresses see subtle lace detailing and add a feminine twist to this modern collection. In addition, daisy lace chain mail adorns cardigans.

Retro Americana returns with a nod to the laid back Hawaiian surf trend. Pastel checks bring a prim, preppy and more grown up aesthetic to the range which take a back seat to the more bold and striking palm tree printed matching suit, a key look for those more brave.

The new “F” of the men’s line makes an appearance on women’s casual range as well, going hand-in-hand with animal-themed embellished tees and cropped neoprene denims.

For eveningwear sizes and proportions have been played with. Modern block dresses are offered in midnight black and blush pink. Oversized beading creates geometric floral details on tailored shapes and sheer fabric that is ideal for experimenting with tonal layering. It’s all in the detail; soft folds add volume to a tailored shape while sharp slits and neckline cut outs add interest to classic silhouettes.

Women’s accessories: The international “It” accessory of the year, bucket bags are key highlights of the French Connection accessories collection, along with the new line of pure leather bags. The popular solid and laser-cut styles make an appearance on classic totes and workbags. Box clutches in neons and varied textures matching French Connection party pieces make an appearance as well.
